Chitosan unit using shrimp shells from seafood plants

This unit collects shrimp heads and shells from peeling plants and turns them into chitin and chitosan. These are powders made by soaking the shells in acid and alkali to strip out minerals and protein, treating them again with strong alkali, then drying and grinding. Chitosan is used in wound dressings, water cleaning, cosmetics and as a plant-growth product for farmers.

Seafood is Visakhapatnam's one-district-one-product, and its port has become India's leading port for seafood exports, most of it frozen shrimp. Peeling leaves behind heaps of shells that are often dried and sold cheaply or thrown away. Pharma and chemical units in and around the city are possible buyers close to home.

You need a chemist who understands the process, stainless steel tanks, a dryer and grinder, a small testing lab, and consent from the state pollution control board, because the process uses strong chemicals and makes waste water that must be treated. The hard parts are steady quality, which buyers test batch by batch, and a small, specialised market where buyers already have suppliers. Shells rot fast, so collection must be quick and clean, and supply drops when shrimp exports slow.

Start by selling chitin and farm-grade chitosan to fertiliser and fish-feed makers. Move to pharma and cosmetic grades once your lab records are strong.
