Morigaon maize milling and feed unit

Unverified

A maize milling unit producing maize meal and graded poultry-feed ingredient from Morigaon's ODOP maize crop, supplying Assam's poultry and feed sector. The edge is being the ODOP maize district with no local milling capacity capturing the value.

Crop production, maintenance & marketing

₹338 cr

Term loans for agriculture & allied activities

₹304 cr

₹102 cr

Morigaon in Assam has a NABARD priority-sector credit potential of about ₹1,086 crore for 2023-24. Farming and allied lines dominate at roughly ₹681 crore (about 63%), while small businesses (MSME) add another ₹246 crore (about 23%) and housing loans a further ₹102 crore.

The district runs almost entirely on agriculture: paddy is king (Boro summer and Sali winter crop), followed by wheat, mustard, jute, black gram, sugarcane and vegetables. Crop loans alone are worth ₹338 crore. Beyond crops, the biggest openings are in livestock and machinery. Sheep, goat and piggery rearing (₹44 cr), poultry (₹39 cr) and dairy (₹38 cr) together make animal husbandry the district's declared thrust area, and farm mechanization is the single largest term-loan line at ₹72 crore. There is also solid room in fisheries (₹26 cr), water resources (₹54 cr) and food & agro-processing (₹12 cr), served by rice mills and processing units across all six blocks.

The plan is candid about what holds the district back: there are no cold storages (at least two are needed), weak irrigation and power supply, missing warehouses at the PACS, poor roads and marketing yards, thin crop and livestock insurance cover, and crop damage by elephants. Entrepreneurs who can fill cold-chain, agro-processing, mechanization or livestock gaps have clear, bank-backed demand to tap.

What the plan promotes

  • Paddy is the major crop; Boro (summer) and Sali (winter) paddy plus wheat, mustard, jute, black gram, sugarcane, maize and seasonal vegetables cultivated across the district
  • Commercial and horticultural crops grown on a moderate scale: potato, sweet potato, ginger, pineapple, banana, citrus/lime/lemon, betel vine, areca nut, black pepper and fruits
  • Animal husbandry is the major thrust area for 2023-24 with large market scope; Sheep/Goat/Piggery ₹44.08 cr, Poultry ₹38.58 cr and Dairy ₹37.63 cr of term-loan potential
  • Area Based Schemes prepared for Dairy & Piggery activity (FY 2016-17 to 2022-23) with projected bank loan of ₹15.75 cr (Rs.1575.00 lakh)
  • Farm mechanization is the single largest term-loan line at ₹72.28 cr, backed by FPOs and Farmers Clubs promoting aggressive mechanization
  • Fish farming through Producers Organisations plus composite fish culture; fisheries term-loan potential ₹25.55 cr with 15,991 MT fish production (2019-20)

Gaps the plan names

  • Lack of irrigation facilities and inadequate power supply; more minor-irrigation projects and pump-set energization (including solar) needed for 'more crop per drop'
  • No cold storages at present in the district against a requirement of at least 2; rural godowns and market yards need to be built at important rural market places, on PPP basis
  • Want of agro-processing and value addition forces farmers to sell in the primary market at low prices; none of the PACS have scientific warehouses
  • Inadequate coverage of Crop Insurance and Livestock Insurance schemes; seed quality control, soil testing and seed testing facilities need considerable attention
  • Lack of awareness among farmers/entrepreneurs about bank and government schemes, delay in loan sanctioning, poor marketing facilities and crop destruction by elephants

Value-chain gaps

Money this district loses today

Raw output sold cheap, value added elsewhere — each gap below is an opening for a local business.

Maize: raw grain → corn flakes & branded snacks

Unverified
Raw 85%Processed 15%

Much of Morigaon's maize still leaves the district as bulk grain, with the food-processing margin captured downstream. Corn-based snacks, flakes and ready-to-eat packs are shelf-stable and sell at several times the raw-grain value through regional retail. A small extrusion-and-packing line would let the maize belt move from commodity grain into branded packaged food.

Maize: raw grain → maize meal & poultry feed

Unverified
Raw 85%Processed 15%

Morigaon's maize-growing belt (its ODOP) sells raw grain at harvest mandi rates, surrendering the processing margin to outside millers. Milled maize meal and formulated poultry feed fetch several times the raw-grain price and serve strong regional feed and food demand. A milling-and-feed unit would let farmers capture value-added margin instead of selling bulk grain.

Growth signal

Maize-based feed and snack demand is rising with poultry-sector and packaged-food growth.
