A tool room designs, makes and repairs the dies and press tools that factories use to cut, bend and punch sheet metal parts. Customers bring a drawing or a sample part, and you deliver a tool that makes thousands of identical pieces.
Raipur has a large engineering and fabrication base next to its steel plants, with industrial estates at Urla, Siltara, Bhanpuri and Rawabhata. Makers of rice mill machinery and fabricated steel parts in these estates use press tools. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for the district says small industry is thin for a place of its size, and proposes a common facility centre for die design.
You need computer-controlled (CNC) machines such as a wire-cut machine, a spark-erosion (EDM) machine and a milling centre, plus design software and at least one experienced toolmaker. The hard part is people: good toolmakers are scarce and take years to train, and one mistake in a hardened die can waste weeks. Work comes order by order, so income can be uneven at first. If the proposed shared centre opens, it may compete with you on price.
Start with repair and resharpening of dies for local press shops, then take on new tools once customers trust your work. Visit factories in person, because this trade runs on word of mouth.
