This unit turns Goan cashews into roasted, salted and flavoured kernels in sealed shop packs. Start by buying graded whole kernels from processors in the district and roasting them in small batches, salted or spiced with pepper and chilli. Later, add machines to shell and peel raw nuts from growers.
Cashew and feni are the two products North Goa is best known for, and the cashew grows on the laterite plateaus of Pernem, Bicholim and Sattari. Much of the crop is still sold as raw nuts at low bulk prices, while packers elsewhere earn more on finished kernels. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for North Goa lists ₹45 crore of credit potential for food and agro processing, and says small farm holdings mean processing and branding are needed for farmers to get better prices.
You need an FSSAI food licence, a roaster, a grading table, a moisture meter and a pouch sealer. The hard part is buying well: kernel and raw nut prices swing each season, and you must hold stock for months without it going stale. Many Goan shops already sell cashews, so stand out with honest grading, fresh stock and a label naming the village and harvest.
Sell through gift shops in Mapusa and Panaji, hotel counters in Calangute and Candolim, and courier orders from repeat buyers.
