This workshop weaves Kunbi cloth on a few handlooms. Kunbi is the checked cotton fabric, often red and white, traditionally worn as a saree by Kunbi and Gawda tribal women in Goa. Part of the cloth is sold as sarees; the rest is stitched into stoles, shirts, bags and table linen that visitors can easily carry home.
NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for South Goa names Kunbi weave among the Goan products being taken up for GI (Geographical Indication) tagging. It also records an Off Farm Producer Organisation, a weavers' group, being formed for Kunbi weaving in the district. That group can help you find weavers and buy yarn together. South Goa's heritage tourism, from old churches to Portuguese-era houses, brings in visitors who look for crafts with a real local story.
You need looms, a small tailoring corner, and weavers willing to learn or relearn the craft. The hard part: skilled Kunbi weavers are few, training takes months, and handloom cloth is slow and costly next to cheap machine-made copies of the check. Your label must explain why the real thing costs more.
Sell through boutiques and craft shops in Margao and the beach villages, hotel gift shops, craft fairs and your own online store, and approach clothing designers who want real Goan textiles.
