This business runs short, hands-on craft sessions where visitors print cloth with carved wooden blocks or paint a small Mata ni Pachedi panel, guided by working artisans. A session can follow a walk through the old pols (gated lanes of old houses).
Ahmedabad's walled city is India's first World Heritage City, and heritage walks start there most mornings. The district is also home to Gamthi and Saudagiri block printing and to Mata ni Pachedi, the painted and printed shrine cloth of the mother goddess, which carries a GI tag (a legal mark that ties a craft to its home). Visitors can buy these crafts, but rarely get to try making them.
You need a small, clean room near the old city, blocks, tables, aprons and quick-setting colours so guests can carry their piece home the same day. Tie up with two or three artisan families and pay them fairly for every session. Register as a shop and take insurance that covers guests. The hard part is the season: visitors come in the cool months and around Uttarayan, the January kite festival, then thin out in the summer heat.
Sell through travel booking sites, hotels and homestays in the old city, school and college trips, and office team outings. Short videos of guests at work do much of your marketing.
