This centre teaches people to assort and grade polished diamonds: sorting stones into lots by size, colour, clarity and cut, using a loupe (a small hand magnifier), a microscope, tweezers and a set of colour master stones. Courses can also cover screening stones to tell natural diamonds from lab-grown ones, and reading grading reports.
Surat is the world's leading centre for cutting and polishing diamonds, and gems and jewellery is its main ODOP product. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Surat notes that most of India's diamonds are processed here, with an export outlet at the Surat Diamond Bourse, and says small firms need skill development. Trading offices in Varachha and Mahidharpura, grading labs and jewellery firms hire people who can sort stones accurately, and some polishers want to move into this desk work.
You need a secure room with daylight lamps, microscopes, a screening machine, sample stones, a safe, CCTV and insurance. Above all you need a trainer with years of grading experience. The hard part is jobs for your students. The diamond trade has been through a long slowdown and many polishers have lost work, so never promise placements. Keep courses short and practical, and shape them around what employers ask for.
