Chamba Valley has rich Pahari handloom traditions, GI-tagged Chamba rumal embroidery, and high-altitude goat (Gaddi/Chamba) wool. A producer cluster scaling these for D2C heritage-textile retail captures multiple streams.

Chamba Valley has been a textile centre for centuries — Chamba rumal (a hand-embroidered scarf with double-sided silk embroidery, GI-tagged) plus traditional Pahari woolen shawls and goat-wool textiles from the local Gaddi/Chamba breed. Most production today is fragmented household-scale, sold via local markets at low margins. A producer cooperative organising 40-60 women across rumal embroidery, weaving, and goat-wool yarn production reaches D2C metro buyers and heritage-craft boutiques at 4-6 times regional prices.
Capex of 6-15 lakh covers improved looms, embroidery hoops, wool-processing equipment, packaging, and branding. NHDP and the Sheep & Wool Mission jointly fund up to 15 lakh in cluster grants. Hard parts: maintaining quality of rumal (slow craft - 3-6 weeks per piece), authentic Chamba styling, and building D2C presence. Start with rumal (highest unit margin); shawls in year 2.
