A hailstorm in late spring or summer can bruise or ruin a whole apple crop in minutes, so nets have spread across the Kotkhai, Jubbal, Theog and Narkanda belt. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Shimla says farmers need awareness of modern equipment such as power sprayers, power tillers and anti-hail nets, and it puts farm mechanisation potential at ₹81.26 crore.
Timing is the whole job. Nets are usually spread only after flowering, so bees can reach the blossom, and they must be folded or taken down before winter, because heavy snow sitting on a net can snap poles and branches. That means short rush periods when every grower wants you at once, on steep slopes and in bad weather. You need a steady team of skilled workers, ladders, safety harnesses, a pickup and a written booking list. Train the team well, because a badly tied frame fails in the first storm.
Win work through growers' associations, net and hardware dealers in Theog and Rohru, and word of mouth. In winter, repair power sprayers and tillers to keep the crew busy.
