Refrigerated truck service for cherries and apples

This business runs one or two refrigerated trucks that carry fresh fruit from the Shimla hills to buyers in Chandigarh, Delhi and beyond, charging by the trip or by the crate.

Shimla district grows almost all of Himachal's sweet cherries, around Narkanda, Kotgarh, Thanedar, Kumarsain and Matiana, and cherries soften within days of picking. After cherries come apples, which fetch more when they reach far markets in good shape. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan says a shortage of cold storage and refrigerated transport forces immediate sale of fruit, so farmers do not get fair prices. It puts storage, including cold storage and cold chain, at ₹60.05 crore.

You need trucks with reliable cooling units, drivers used to mountain roads, a goods permit, and FSSAI registration for carrying food. The hard part is keeping the trucks busy. Ordinary trucks are cheaper and carry most apples to Delhi overnight, so your customers are cherry growers and traders sending fruit to distant cities. Fruit moves in a few months, monsoon landslides block roads at the apple peak, and trips back up are often empty, so look for return loads such as dairy and frozen food for Shimla's hotels. One cooling failure can spoil a whole load.
