This plant makes corrugated cardboard boxes for packing apples, mainly the standard universal carton. You buy kraft paper in reels, glue it into board on a corrugating line, then cut, crease, print and stitch the boxes.

You need a factory shed, a semi-automatic corrugating and printing line, consent from the state pollution control board, a fire safety check and a trained machine crew. Printing a grower's own orchard name on the box can win loyal buyers. The hard part is the calendar: demand is packed into the harvest, so you must buy paper and build stock months ahead, keep it dry in damp hill weather, and find other box buyers for the rest of the year. Established box makers in the plains and state agencies also sell cartons, so price and on-time delivery decide who wins.
