Latehar district has substantial tasar silk production — tribal communities rear cocoons on Asan and Arjun trees in the forest. Most cocoons exit to Bhagalpur (Bihar) and other reeling centres at low margins. A small unit running tasar silk reeling and basic spinning plus a complementary tribal-craft cluster captures both silk and handicraft economies. Tasar silk has growing D2C demand in metro fashion brands.
Capex of 8-18 lakh covers silk-reeling equipment, basic finishing, craft workshop tools, and brand support. The National Sericulture Programme (NSP) plus DCH (handicrafts) jointly fund up to 60% capex for tribal-area producer companies. Hard parts: tasar reeling skill (specialised), seasonal cocoon supply, and reaching mainland fashion brands. Start with reeling (highest margin per unit); craft expansion in year 2.
