Oyster mushroom spawn lab for village growers

A spawn lab grows mushroom seed, called spawn, on boiled and sterilised wheat or other grain inside clean bags. Growers mix this spawn into wet straw packed in bags, and oyster mushrooms come up within a few weeks. The lab sells spawn by the packet.

Mushroom growing has spread among women's self-help groups in Jharkhand, and the state agricultural university at Kanke and the farm science centres train new growers. Mushrooms are a familiar food in Ranchi, where wild rugra fills the markets every monsoon. Paddy straw, the main growing material, is easy to get because rice is the district's main crop. Spawn does not keep long, so a lab close to growers can deliver it fresh.

You need a small clean room, an autoclave (a large pressure cooker for sterilising), a clean-air workbench, an incubation room, a trained person, and an FSSAI registration if you also sell fresh mushrooms. The hard part is contamination: one careless batch turns green with mould and must be thrown away. Some spawn is already sold around the city, so win on freshness and steady delivery. Demand also dips in the hottest months.

Sell to self-help groups, farmer groups and training programmes. Buy back mushrooms from growers who cannot find buyers and sell them in Ranchi's vegetable markets.
