This unit turns coconut shells into activated carbon: charcoal heated with steam in a closed kiln until it is full of tiny pores that trap dirt, smells and chemicals. You buy dry shells or shell charcoal, then activate, crush, sieve and pack the carbon by grain size.
Coconut is the district's main crop. NABARD's credit plan lists it on 66,700 hectares and names shell charcoal among the coconut products that can make farming pay better. The plan also counts coconut oil mills among the district's common small food units, and every nut leaves a shell. Shell carbon is hard and fine-pored, which suits water filters and gold recovery.
You need a large plot away from homes, a charcoal kiln and a steam kiln, dust and smoke controls, a small lab to test every batch, and consent from the pollution control board. The hard part is the site and the quality. Industrial land is scarce and costly in this crowded district, neighbours object to smoke, and buyers reject lots that fail their tests. Shell prices move with the harvest, and established plants in Tamil Nadu and other coconut states compete hard on price.
