This unit turns coir pith (the spongy dust left when coir fibre is pulled from coconut husk) into clean, composted potting mix. You sell it in sacks and as filled grow bags with a vegetable seedling, the way terrace gardeners like to buy them.
Coconut is the district's main crop: NABARD's credit plan lists it on 66,700 hectares. Coir making has long been a livelihood in coastal villages north of the city such as Kadinamkulam, and it leaves coir pith behind. The same plan puts 4,110 hectares under vegetables through the state's food self-sufficiency drive, and many city families grow vegetables on their terraces. Krishi Bhavans (the local farm offices) also hand out bags and seedlings under state vegetable programmes.
You need a covered yard, a sieve and mixer, water to wash salt out of the pith, and several weeks to compost each batch with helpful microbes. If you sell the mix as manure, check whether it must be registered under fertiliser rules. The hard part is margin: sacks are bulky and cheap, transport eats profit, and low-priced coco peat blocks from Tamil Nadu compete. Sales peak before the monsoon and ahead of Onam planting.
Sell to plant nurseries, to Krishi Bhavans and local bodies buying for vegetable programmes, and to flats in the Kazhakoottam and Technopark area.
