Repair work means patching hulls, re-coating worn plywood with fresh fibreglass, fixing engine mounts and repainting before the fishing season. Repairs keep money coming in between orders for new boats.
NABARD's credit plan for the district says Thiruvananthapuram has more active fish workers than any other Kerala district, in fishing villages from Varkala to Poovar. The plan names country boats, outboard motors and fishing gear as good areas for bank lending, and notes a shortage of modern fishing boats. Many families here fish from plywood or fibreglass canoes driven by outboard motors.
You need a covered shed near the shore with road access, moulds for each boat size, a skilled boat carpenter and fibreglass workers, fire-safe storage for resin, and consent from the pollution control board. Every new boat must be registered with the state fisheries department before it can fish. The hard part is steady work: fishers buy boats only when catches and loans allow, and a fishermen's federation and private yards in the region already build boats.
Sell to fishing families and their cooperative societies, to fisheries department programmes, and to tourist boat operators at Poovar and Veli.
