This centre owns a tractor and potato machines: a planter that drops seed potatoes at even spacing, a ridger that forms the beds, and a digger that lifts the crop at harvest. It rents them to farmers by the acre, with a driver. Off-season, the tractor can pull a seed drill and a rotavator (a tilling machine) for soybean and wheat.
Potato is Indore's One District One Product crop, grown alongside soybean and wheat on the Malwa plateau. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Indore sees Rs 513.99 crore of possible bank lending for farm machines and names machine demonstrations as a priority. Hand planting and digging need many workers on the same few days, and at peak season labour is hard to find.
You need a tractor, the machines, a shed and a skilled operator. The hard part is timing: every farmer wants the planter in the same short window, so bookings must be handled fairly, and the machines sit idle for months. Many bigger farmers here already own a tractor, so your main customers are small and middle farmers. Keep spares and a mechanic on call, because a breakdown in season loses you business.
