This is a small lab that tests soil and irrigation water for farmers. It measures acidity, salt, organic matter and the main plant foods (nitrogen, phosphorus and potash), then gives each farmer a simple card saying how much fertiliser to use for the next crop.
Indore's farms grow potato, the district's One District One Product crop, along with wheat and soybean, and most of the farmland is irrigated. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Indore lists weak farm advice services as a gap and suggests a soil-testing lab in every block. The plan covers four blocks, Depalpur, Sanwer, Hatod and Mhow, and 656 villages, and sees Rs 2544.20 crore of possible bank lending for growing crops, so farmers here spend real money on seed and fertiliser every season.
You need a rented room, basic lab instruments and a person trained in agriculture or chemistry. The hard part is getting paid. Government labs also test soil free of charge, and many farmers are not used to paying for a test, so income grows slowly. You win by giving faster reports, clearer advice in Hindi and irrigation water tests as well.
Reach farmers through farmer producer organisations (FPOs), seed and fertiliser shops, and village meetings before the potato and wheat sowing season. Offer a lower rate for group samples from a whole village.
