This plant takes in food and flower waste, breaks it down in closed tanks, and turns it into biogas (a fuel for stoves and generators) and a slurry that dries into manure. It is paid to take the waste away.
NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Mumbai City lists renewable energy potential of ₹100.00 cr, including energy from about 6000 tonnes of organic waste the city makes each day, and names waste-to-energy as a growing need. The Island City has steady sources close together: the markets at Crawford Market, Byculla and Dadar, including Dadar's flower market, and the hotels and office canteens of Fort, Colaba and Nariman Point. Municipal rules push hotels and large housing societies to process their own wet waste.
What it takes: land is the hardest part on a crowded island, so you will likely need a long lease from the municipal corporation, a market body or a large campus. You also need state pollution board consent, a trained plant operator and trucks for daily pickup. Plastic mixed into the waste can choke the tanks, smells bring complaints, and waste makers bargain hard on fees.
Sign pickup deals with hotels, canteens, market associations and housing societies before you build. Sell the gas to a nearby kitchen or burn it for power, and the manure to nurseries and farms.
