This studio designs jewellery on a computer using CAD (computer-aided design) software and prints each design as a wax or resin model on a 3D printer. Jewellers use these models to cast rings, pendants and earrings in gold or silver. The studio charges per design and per printed model.
Gems and jewellery is Mumbai City's main One District One Product, and the Zaveri Bazaar and Kalbadevi area is one of India's busiest bullion and jewellery markets. Some smaller makers there still carve wax models by hand or wait days for outside designers. What the district most lacks is the step from trading loose stones to selling designed, branded jewellery, and good design is the first part of that step.
What it takes: a jewellery-grade 3D printer, a curing unit (a lamp box that hardens the printed resin), a strong computer, paid software licences and one or two trained CAD designers. The hard parts are competition, since other CAD studios already work in the bazaar; winning the trust of makers who guard their designs (sign simple confidentiality letters and keep files locked); and keeping the printer busy outside the wedding and festive seasons.
Win customers by visiting workshops with printed samples and promising quick turnaround. In a close-knit bazaar, word of mouth then does most of the selling.
