This is a small walking-tour business. You lead groups through a working Koliwada (a Koli fishing village) in the early morning: boats coming in, the catch being sold, women sorting fish and bombil (Bombay duck) drying on bamboo racks. The walk ends with a simple seafood meal cooked by a Koli family.
Mumbai Suburban still has working fishing villages inside the city. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan names the Koliwadas at Marve, Oshiwara and Borivali and puts marine fisheries at ₹6,630.57 crore, the district's biggest farm-credit line. Versova, Madh and Gorai are also well-known fishing villages, and marine produce is one of the district's two One District One Product picks.
What it takes is trust more than money. Agree with village elders and host families on routes, photo rules and a fair share for every family that cooks. Hosts serving meals should hold a basic FSSAI food registration, and you need public liability insurance. The hard part is the calendar and the people. Fishing stops for the monsoon ban in June and July, boat timings shift with the tide, and some residents will not want visitors. Keep groups small and respectful.
