This is a small workshop with a handful of handlooms, where hired or partner weavers make Paithani sarees, dupattas and stoles in silk with zari (metal thread) borders and woven motifs. You buy the silk and zari, pay weavers per piece, and sell the finished work under your own name.
Paithani is one of Nashik's two One District One Product (ODOP) items and carries a GI (geographical indication) tag, which ties the name to this region. Yeola taluka is one of its best-known weaving centres, with families who have woven it for generations, so skilled weavers and loom makers are close by.
You need a well-lit room, looms, a stock of silk and zari, and registration as a handloom unit. The hard part is money and time. One saree can take weeks to weave, so a lot of cash sits in half-finished work. Cheaper machine-made copies sell alongside the real thing, so you must show yours is handwoven, with weaver details and proper certificates. Keeping good weavers means paying them fairly and on time.
