This unit cleans, grades and packs Chak-hao, Manipur's black rice, and turns part of it into ready-to-use foods: black rice flakes (like poha), flour for porridge and baking, and a ready mix for chak-hao kheer, the purple rice pudding served at Manipuri feasts.
Chak-hao received a Geographical Indication tag in 2020, which reserves the name for black rice grown in Manipur, and it is grown across the Imphal valley, including this district. NABARD's credit plan names paddy as the district's main crop and counts 18 food, rice, flour and oil processing units already working here, so millers and mechanics who know rice machines are close at hand.
You need an FSSAI licence, registration as an authorised user of the Chak-hao name, a destoner and grader, a small huller, a flaking machine, a flour mill and a packing machine. The hard parts are buying true Chak-hao (other black rice looks similar), keeping the grain from breaking during flaking, and holding enough packaging and spare parts to ride out highway blockades.
Sell cleaned rice and flakes to health-food and organic stores in big cities and online, to bakeries and hotels in Imphal, and to Manipuri grocery shops in other states.
