This business hatches eggs in machines and sells day-old chicks to farmers. It can run two lines: fast-growing broiler chicks for meat farms, and hardy coloured country-type birds that rural families and self-help groups rear in their backyards. Keeping your own parent flock (the hens and cocks that lay the hatching eggs) means you do not depend on eggs from outside the state.
NABARD's credit plan for Imphal West estimates ₹6.93 crore of term loans for poultry and names pig, poultry and fish farming as the district's emerging activities, backed by the farm science centre, ICAR and the Central Agricultural University. Much of the valley's chick supply comes by road from other states. Chicks weaken on the long journey, and supply stops whenever the national highways are blocked.
You need a site away from other farms, sheds for the parent flock, egg setters and hatchers (large incubators), a cool room for eggs, a generator for power cuts, clean water, a trained hatchery manager and a vet for vaccination. The hard parts are disease, which can wipe out a flock, keeping hatch rates high, and buying parent birds and feed from outside the state.
Sell to broiler farmers, self-help groups and government poultry programmes, and through feed and veterinary shops across the valley.
