Khurkul silk stole finishing and packing unit

This unit buys silk stoles, scarves and cloth woven by weavers in the district, then finishes them to the standard buyers outside the state expect. The work includes washing and softening, mending faults, knotting fringes, pressing, checking every piece, and adding a label that names the village and weaver group before packing.

Khurkul, about 20 km from Imphal, is one of Manipur's traditional silk villages, where families have reared silkworms for generations, and its silk is listed as Imphal West's One District One Product. Much of it is sold as yarn or plain cloth, so the finishing, the branding and the extra money go to traders elsewhere. NABARD's credit plan counts 265 weaving cooperatives and 91 handloom and handicraft societies in the district, so there is woven work to buy close by.

You need a work shed with clean water, washing tubs, a steam press, sewing machines, a light table and staff trained in silk care. Learn to test silk so you never sell mixed yarn as pure silk. The hard part is getting even quality from many small weavers and paying them on time, while carrying stock for shops that pay late.
