Mokokchung produces some of the world's hottest chilli — Bhut Jolokia, GI-tagged. Most leaves the district as fresh chilli at low margins. A small drying/powder/sauce unit captures the global hot-sauce premium.

Mokokchung's farmers grow Bhut Jolokia (Naga king chilli) — a Guinness-record holder for capsaicin content, GI-protected, with established global hot-sauce demand. Most output sells fresh during a brief window at low prices. A small unit doing drying + powdering + a basic hot-sauce production line captures the value-add and reaches the global hot-sauce, snack-food, and pharmaceutical (capsaicin extract) buyers at 8–12× the raw chilli price.
Capex of ₹8–18 lakh covers a hot-air dryer, mill, sauce kitchen, and packing/labeling line. MIDH (horticulture infrastructure) and the Spices Board's value-add scheme fund up to 50% capex. Hard parts: handling the chilli safely (it's genuinely hazardous — staff need PPE), getting Spice Board grade certifications, and building hot-sauce brand against global brands like Naga Pickle (UK) which has scaled this space already. Start with dried whole chilli for the export market (simplest); sauce SKUs follow.
