Bargarh is a primary centre of GI-protected Sambalpuri Bandha (Sambalpuri ikat) — distinctive resist-dyed cotton and silk woven across many scattered weaver households and largely sold through intermediaries below its worth. A producer cooperative organising 50-80 weavers, standardising dye and yarn supply, running quality control and opening shared D2C channels reaches metro buyers at a strong multiple of regional prices, capturing the raw-weave-to-branded-retail gap. It builds directly on the district's Sambalpuri handloom weaving hub. Honest constraints: maintaining authentic tie-dye (bandha) quality and dye-lot consistency across households is the core challenge; the GI tag must be properly used and defended against the powerloom imitations that undercut the category; and the operator must build genuine D2C metro buyer relationships rather than relying on traders.
