This is a feed mill that grinds, mixes and presses feed pellets for pond fish and poultry. It uses rice bran and broken rice from local rice mills, plus maize, oil cakes and minerals, and sells feed in labelled bags that state the protein content.
NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Khordha sees ₹105.02 crore of possible bank lending for fisheries and ₹106.98 crore for poultry, and names poultry feed as a processing option. Paddy is the main crop, and the plan counts 82 rice, flour, dal, oil and tea processing units, so rice bran is close at hand. ICAR's Central Institute of Fresh Water Aquaculture (CIFA) is in Bhubaneswar and trains fish farmers.
You need a shed, a grinder, mixer, pellet machine, dryer and a small lab for moisture and protein tests, plus Udyam (small business) and GST registration and pollution board consent. The hard part is cost: grain and oil-cake prices swing, and you compete with large feed companies. Damp grain grows harmful moulds, so store it dry. Fish farmers often ask for floating feed (pellets that stay on the water surface), which needs a costlier machine, so plan for it early.
Sell through feed dealers and at fisheries and livestock department camps, and direct to farms. Farmers often buy on credit, so keep enough cash for day-to-day running.
