This centre buys live mud crabs from fishers and small traders. Each crab sits in its own box of clean, cool water so they do not fight. Workers sort them by size and by how full of meat they are. Healthy crabs are packed alive in cool, damp boxes and sent out the same day.
Part of Chilika Lake lies in Khordha, and its catch includes prawns and mud crabs. Balugaon, on the lake's western shore, is an old trading town for that catch, on the national highway and main railway line between Kolkata and Chennai. Fish products are on the district's one-district-one-product list, and NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Khordha ties its brackish-water fishing to Chilika.
You need Udyam (small business) and GST registration, an FSSAI food licence, a generator, pumps and filters for the tanks, and trained crab handlers. The hard part is keeping crabs alive: bad water, heat or a long power cut can kill a whole batch, and a dead crab is worth little. The catch changes with the season, buyers set the price, and fishers want cash while buyers may pay late. Never buy undersized crabs or females carrying eggs.
Sell to seafood exporters and wholesalers in Kolkata and Chennai, and to hotels and seafood restaurants in Bhubaneswar and Puri.
