This is a small label for home textiles and gifts built on Pattachitra art. Khordha's painters either hand-paint each piece or let you print their designs for a fee on every piece sold. Tailors stitch the cloth into stoles, bags, wall hangings, cushion covers and table runners. You sell them under your own name.
Pattachitra is one of Khordha's one-district-one-product crafts and carries a GI (geographical indication) tag. Painters here mostly sell to traders at low prices, while finished work sells for much more in shops. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan puts possible bank lending for exports from the district at ₹5625 crore and sees good scope for handloom and handicraft products. It also notes that artisans lack an organised way to reach buyers.
You need GST and Udyam (small business) registration, a workroom, a trademark for your label and a written agreement with each artist. The hard part is keeping hand-painted pieces even in quality and making sure colours do not run in the wash. Label printed pieces clearly as prints, and keep the Pattachitra name for work painted by hand in the traditional way, since the GI tag protects that name. Unsold stock can tie up your cash.
