Hadoti garlic dehydration and powder unit

Unverified

Baran's Hadoti belt grows garlic that crashes to throwaway mandi prices in glut years. A dehydration-and-powder unit converts bulbs into shelf-stable flakes, powder, and paste for masala and food-service buyers.

Baran district's NABARD credit plan for 2023-24 sizes the total priority-sector opportunity at Rs 4,814.82 crore. Farming dominates: agriculture (crop loans plus allied term loans and infrastructure) accounts for Rs 4,226.00 crore (87.77%), while small business (MSME) makes up Rs 469.74 crore (9.76%), with education, housing, renewable energy and social infrastructure filling the rest.

The biggest single piece is the crop loan of Rs 2,920.68 crore on roughly 4.9 lakh hectares of wheat, soybean, mustard, garlic, coriander and paddy. Baran is a standout garlic belt, producing 50,000-55,000 tonnes a year, so the plan repeatedly points to garlic and coriander processing and export units. Dairy is the leading allied activity at Rs 237.82 crore (96 milk societies, though many have gone quiet), and farm mechanisation adds Rs 302.79 crore.

The plan also earmarks Rs 497.59 crore for storage and market yards and Rs 85.42 crore for food and agro-processing. On the non-farm side, three industrial areas (Baran, IID Baran and Chhabra) and 2,151 registered units drive Rs 352.04 crore of MSME working-capital demand.

The PLP's own biggest warning is storage: only about 1.18 lakh tonnes of capacity exists against roughly 6.21 lakh tonnes of produce, with just one small cold store. It also flags missing food-processing units, weak dairy packing, unreliable power for processing, and small/landless farmers left out of crop credit.

What the plan promotes

  • Crop loan potential of Rs 2920.68cr across ~493,400 ha, led by wheat (~121,900 ha), soybean (~121,200 ha), mustard (~83,000 ha), garlic (~20,600 ha), coriander (~41,500 ha) and paddy in the Chambal command area
  • Garlic cluster: 50,000-55,000 MT produced annually on 10,000-15,000 ha, flagged for garlic processing and export-oriented units (garlic mandi arrivals ~48,000 MT)
  • Storage & marketing infrastructure worth Rs 497.59cr (889 units incl. 258 warehouses of 5,000 MT, 595 smaller godowns and 19 cold-storage units) to bridge a large storage shortfall
  • Dairy is a major allied activity with Rs 237.82cr potential; 96 dairy cooperative societies linked to Zila Dugdh (Jhalawad Milk Federation), though ~41 societies have gone dormant
  • Food & agro processing potential of Rs 85.42cr covering foodgrain mills, oilseed/edible-oil extraction, rice mills, spice (coriander) processing, dal mills and dairy-product units
  • Farm mechanisation potential of Rs 302.79cr; district holds ~28,646 tractors and 64,163 agricultural pumpsets

Gaps the plan names

  • Severe storage shortfall: only ~118,000 MT capacity against ~621,000 MT of production needing storage; district lacks adequate cold storage, warehouses and market yards
  • No cold-storage / warehouse chain means horticulture and perishable produce is sold cheap to traders; only 1 cold-store (4,000 MT) exists in the district
  • Absence of agro/food-processing units despite ample raw material (mustard, soybean, garlic, coriander); no cooperative processing unit and only limited private wheat grading
  • Village-level lack of safe storage for seed, fertiliser and produce forces farmers to sell immediately at low prices; small, marginal and landless farmers remain outside crop-credit through JLGs
  • Cold storage, technical support and training facilities for food processing are lacking; unreliable power supply and weak rural road/transport links hamper fruit and dairy processing

Value-chain gaps

Money this district loses today

Raw output sold cheap, value added elsewhere — each gap below is an opening for a local business.

Garlic: raw bulbs → dehydrated flakes, powder & paste

Unverified
Raw 85%Processed 15%

Baran's ODOP garlic is sold mostly as raw bulbs at mandi prices that swing sharply with glut and rot losses. Dehydrated garlic flakes, powder, and ready-to-use paste command several times the raw price, store far longer, and sell into food-processing and export channels. A local dehydration and packing unit converts a perishable glut crop into a shelf-stable branded product.

Growth signal

Demand for dehydrated garlic and convenience spice ingredients is rising with packaged-food growth.

Soybean: raw seed → oil, refined meal & soya foods

Unverified
Raw 80%Processed 20%

Baran's soybean and oilseed harvest leaves mostly as raw seed sold to crushers outside the district. Crushing locally into edible oil plus de-oiled cake for feed, and processing soya into flour or textured protein, captures the crushing and refining margin currently exported with the raw seed. A district-level solvent-extraction and refining cluster would keep that value in the Hadoti belt.

Growth signal

Edible-oil and plant-protein demand in India continues to grow steadily.
