This business sends trained crews to harvest coconuts on contract and rents out small farm machines by the day, such as tree-climbing devices, brush cutting machines, spray pumps and a small tractor with a trailer for carrying nuts. You earn per tree harvested and per day of machine hire.
NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Coimbatore notes that coconut covers more than half of the district's net sown area, and puts farm mechanisation credit potential at ₹493.78 crore. It asks banks to finance farm implements beyond tractors and combine harvesters because farms here are short of labour. Coconuts are picked every month or two, so a crew that turns up on time is worth a lot to a grower. Local workshops make farm equipment, so machines and repairs are close by.
You need workers trained to climb safely with climbing devices and harnesses, accident insurance for every worker, a vehicle and a simple booking system. The hard part is keeping good climbers through the busy season, when other contractors try to hire them away, and planning routes so little time is lost travelling between groves. Machine repairs also eat into earnings.
Find customers through coconut growers' associations, coconut traders in Pollachi and farmer producer groups. Yearly contracts with larger groves give you steady work.
