An assaying and hallmarking centre tests the purity of gold jewellery sent in by jewellers and laser-marks each approved piece with the BIS hallmark and its unique ID. Hallmarking with this ID is compulsory for gold jewellery sold by registered jewellers in notified districts, so a jeweller's stock must pass through a centre like this before it is sold.

The hard part is volume. BIS sets the fee per piece and it is low, several centres already work in the city, and jewellers switch for faster service. A wrong result can also lead to BIS action against your recognition.
