This is a packhouse near the mango orchards of Malihabad. Growers or a farmer producer group bring in fruit, which you wash, sort by size and quality, ripen in closed chambers with ethylene (a ripening gas allowed by food safety rules) instead of banned carbide, and pack in marked, cushioned boxes.
The Dashehari mango of Malihabad carries a GI (Geographical Indication) tag and is as much a part of Lucknow's food fame as its kebabs. Yet NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Lucknow says mango growing and marketing is still unorganised, lists weak post-harvest handling and cold chain as gaps, and puts storage and marketing potential at Rs. 210.94 crore. A state-run packhouse at Rehmankhera already treats and packs fruit for export, so aim yours at the home market.
You need a covered shed close to the orchards, sorting tables, a cold room, ripening chambers and a loading bay for trucks. The mango season lasts only a few weeks, so plan other work for the rest of the year, such as ripening bananas or handling vegetables from nearby farms. The hard parts are persuading growers to supply you instead of their usual traders and running a tight season with no delays.
