This studio turns sari and brocade designs into the punched cards and computer files that jacquard looms need. A jacquard is the device on the loom that lifts threads in a set pattern. Handlooms mostly read the pattern from a chain of punched cards, while electronic jacquards read a computer file. You draw or scan the design, work out the weave on design software, then punch the cards or send the file.
Varanasi is the home of Banarasi silk, a GI (Geographical Indication) product and the district's One District One Product, woven by a very large community of handloom and powerloom weavers. Every new motif, border or all-over pattern needs this work before weaving can start. Weavers who want to sell under their own name also need designs of their own.
You need a few computers with textile design software, a card punching machine, a printer, and someone who knows both Banarasi motifs and how a design behaves on the loom. The hard part is competition and cash. Card punching is an old trade in the city, so you must win on speed, accuracy and files for the newer electronic looms. Many weavers pay late, and designs are easily copied.
Find customers through loom-parts shops, weaver groups and master weavers. Also sell custom designs to fashion designers.
