This is a small guide and trip-planning service for Buddhist pilgrims. You take groups around Sarnath's stupas, ruins and museum, tell the story of the Buddha's first sermon, and arrange transport, meals and quiet time for prayer. Many also want a morning boat ride on the Ganga.
Sarnath lies inside Varanasi district, a short drive from the city, and is one of the four holiest places in Buddhism. Several countries have built temples and monasteries there, and pilgrims from across Asia visit through the year, most of all in the cooler months. Varanasi's airport and railway junction make it an easy stop on a longer pilgrimage.
You need an approved guide licence from the tourism department, which means a training course and an exam, plus a phone, a simple website and deep knowledge of the site. The hard part is language. A guide who speaks Thai, Sinhala, Japanese or Burmese is far more useful to these groups than one who speaks only English or Hindi, and learning a new language takes a long time.
