Almora's hill villages produce distinctive Pahari woolen shawls and stoles plus grow indigenous pulse varieties — gahat (horse gram), bhatt (black soybean), masoor — that have been gaining D2C health-food traction. A producer cooperative organising 40-60 women across handloom production plus a small pulse-mill unit captures both. Pahari shawls reach D2C metro retail at 4-6 times regional prices; pulse SKUs reach health-food retail at 3-5 times bulk price.
Capex of 6-14 lakh covers shared looms, basic pulse mill, packaging, and brand support. NHDP (handloom cluster) and PMFME (food processing) jointly fund up to 60% capex. The Uttarakhand Sustainable Tourism Mission has additional cluster grants for Pahari producers. Hard parts: combining textile and food-processing in one operating model, brand-building for indigenous pulses, and shipping logistics from hill terrain. Start with pulses (faster to launch, broader market); textiles in year 2.
