This is a family-run homestay of three to five guest rooms in a village house in the Kalsi and Chakrata hills, known as Jaunsar-Bawar. Guests eat home-cooked food such as mandua (finger millet) rotis, hill pulses and seasonal greens, walk village trails, and see local fairs and old stone-and-wood houses.
Jaunsar-Bawar is part of Dehradun district but feels very different from the city, with its own dress, festivals and building style. Dehradun's airport, railway station and highway links to Delhi bring visitors within reach. NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Dehradun notes that the hill areas lag the plains, so a homestay brings income straight to a hill household.
This suits a local family that already owns a house here. Under the state's homestay rules the owner's family must live in the house, and the homestay must be registered with the tourism department. You need clean attached bathrooms, hot water, safe drinking water and basic fire safety. The hard part is the season: monsoon landslides can close roads, winter weekdays are quiet, and a hospital is far away. Foreign guests need special permission to go beyond Kalsi towards Chakrata, so plan for mostly Indian guests.
