Bagdogra airport, just west of Siliguri in this district, is the main air gateway to Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik, Kalimpong and Sikkim, and trains into Siliguri bring many more visitors. Hill roads are long and winding, driving them after dark is tiring and risky, and monsoon landslides often close them for hours, so many travellers need a bed near the airport. NABARD's credit plan calls the district the gateway to Northeast India and names tourism a major seasonal activity from April to June and in September and October.
You need land on or near the airport road, or an existing building to convert, plus building approvals, fire safety clearance, a trade licence and a manager who knows online booking sites. This is a big, slow investment, and Siliguri already has many hotels. The hard part is filling rooms in the off-season, so go after business travellers and wedding guests then.
