This shop rents trekking gear by the day: warm jackets, trekking shoes, rain ponchos, gloves, woollen caps, walking poles and sleeping bags. Trekkers pay a deposit, collect the kit before they start and return it when they come back down.
Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal, lies inside Singalila National Park in this district, and the trek starts at Maneybhanjang near Darjeeling town. It draws families, students and office groups from Kolkata and other cities, and many first-timers do not own proper mountain clothing. The trail passes homestays and trekkers' huts, so walkers need warm, dry clothes rather than tents. Nights near the top are cold for much of the year.
You need a small shop, sturdy stock in all sizes, a washing and drying routine, and a simple deposit and ID check. The hard part is care: gear gets wet, torn or lost, and damp jackets start to smell if they are not dried properly in the misty hill weather. The park is closed to trekkers from mid-June to mid-September, so plan for three months with almost no rentals.
Reach trekkers through the guides that every group must hire inside the park, through homestays along the route, and through trekking groups online. Offer to drop kits at Darjeeling hotels the night before a trek.
