This is a small craft label for Tikuli painting. You agree a fixed design range with local artisans, such as coasters, trays, wall plates, key chains, jewellery boxes and fridge magnets. You buy the materials, check quality, pack, photograph and sell. The artisans paint; you make sure every order looks the same and ships on time.
Tikuli is known as Patna's own art. Today it is painted on hardboard cut into shapes, with several coats of enamel sanded smooth between each coat for a glass-like shine. Many of the artisans are women working from home in Digha, Danapur and Gai Ghat. It is one of the district's official products, yet most work is sold as loose pieces through middlemen.
You need a small workroom for cutting, sanding and packing, a jigsaw, enamel paints, good lighting and a phone with a decent camera. Register with Udyam, and get GST if you sell online. The hard part is steady quality: wet enamel picks up dust, and different painters paint the same design in different ways. Pay artisans fairly and on time, or the best ones will leave. Bulk gift orders come with tight deadlines.
Sell through craft fairs, gift shops in hotels and near museums, company and government gift orders at festival time, and online stores.
