Jammu is called the City of Temples and is the main gateway to the Vaishno Devi shrine near Katra. Shops in Katra's main bazaar and around Jammu's temples sell chunris and prasad packs every day, and sales climb around the two Navratris, when the shrine sees some of its biggest crowds. Tailoring is a common skill in the city and its villages, so you can start with a small team and train them in gota work.
You need a few power sewing machines, a cutting table, a small screen-printing set-up for names and symbols, Udyam registration and GST. The hard part is price: shops buy on thin margins, often on credit, and can also buy low-cost stock from large wholesalers. Use colour-fast dye and neat finishing, since a chunri that bleeds colour loses repeat orders. More pilgrims now take the train straight to Katra, so Katra shops matter as much as Jammu ones.
Visit shop owners in Katra and near Raghunath temple with samples, offer printed bags carrying the shop's own name, and take bulk orders early, before each Navratri season.
