This service raises paddy seedlings on mats and plants them in farmers' fields with a machine transplanter, charging by the acre. It can also sell ready seedlings to farmers who still plant by hand.
The district's plains, and the R.S. Pura belt in particular, are known for basmati, the district's one-district-one-product crop. All of it has to be transplanted in a few weeks around the start of the monsoon, and that needs a lot of hands. NABARD's credit plan for the district counts farm mechanisation at Rs 55.49 crore and crop production at Rs 1321.18 crore of possible bank lending, so local banks are asked to lend for farm machines.
You need two or three riding or walk-behind transplanters, nursery trays or plastic sheets for the mats, a tractor-trolley to carry mats to the fields, and a trained operator for each machine. The hard part is the nursery: mat seedlings must be ready on the right day for each field, and basmati seedlings do not wait. The machines sit idle for most of the year, small uneven plots slow them down, and many farmers will want to see a machine-planted crop before they trust it.
Start with a few demonstration fields in R.S. Pura villages, work with farmer groups and FPOs (farmer-owned companies), and book fields well before the season.
