This workshop makes and tin-coats traditional Kashmiri copperware: samovars for kahwa, the large trami plates shared at a wazwan feast, deghs (cooking pots), and the jug and basin passed around for washing hands before a meal. Alongside, it runs kalai, the tin-coating that makes copper safe for cooking and has to be redone from time to time.
Srinagar's old city has long been the valley's centre for copperware, and the copper lanes of Zaina Kadal are still busy with the trade. NABARD's credit plan for the district names copper-ware among its handicraft clusters. Wazwan is traditionally cooked in large copper deghs and served on trami, so cooks and caterers need both new pieces and fresh tin-coating.
You need a couple of skilled coppersmiths and an engraver, sheet-cutting and hammering tools, a buffing machine, and a well-ventilated corner for kalai, since the heating and flux give off fumes. The hard parts: cheaper machine-made copperware from outside the valley competes hard, copper prices move sharply, and young people are leaving the craft. Hammering is loud, so a site away from homes helps.
Sell to wazas (wedding cooks) and caterers before the wedding season, to restaurants and hotels serving wazwan, and to families setting up a home. Offer small engraved samovars to visitors and online buyers.
