This is a farm that grows cut flowers such as roses or gerberas inside a polyhouse, a greenhouse made of plastic sheet over a steel frame. The cover shields plants from heavy rain and pests, so flowers come out cleaner and more even.
NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Bengaluru Urban says the district is moving into protected (polyhouse) cultivation of vegetables and cut flowers for better prices. It puts plantation, horticulture and sericulture at ₹274.53 cr, including cut flowers and commercial nurseries feeding the Bengaluru market. The city has big wholesale flower markets, a busy wedding and events trade, and an international airport that handles perishable cargo.
What it takes: about half an acre of leased farmland on the city's edge, such as around Anekal or Yelahanka, a polyhouse with drip lines and fertigation (fertiliser fed through the drip), healthy young plants, a small cold room and a packing shed. The hard part is water, disease and prices. The same plan warns that groundwater here is over-exploited, so dig a farm pond or store rainwater. One fungal outbreak can wipe out weeks of harvest. Prices also fall sharply after the wedding and festival seasons.
Buyers are florists, hotels, event decorators and wholesale flower traders. Sell to a few regular traders first, and approach exporters only once quality is steady.
