This is a small crew that builds and looks after rainwater harvesting for homes and buildings: roof pipes, filter units, underground storage tanks (sumps) and recharge wells that let rain soak back into the ground. Yearly cleaning contracts give steady income between new jobs.
NABARD's 2023-24 credit plan for Bengaluru Urban says the district's water table is over-exploited and lists a rainwater harvesting shortfall as an infrastructure gap, tied to reviving lakes. The city's water board makes rainwater harvesting compulsory for many buildings, and dry borewells and tanker water are familiar worries for residents. New apartment blocks keep adding to the pressure. Experienced well diggers still work around the city.
What it takes: diggers and plumbers with basic tools, a used pickup vehicle, and a good grasp of soil so the wells soak up water. The hard part is trust and timing. Many older systems were badly built and never cleaned, so buyers are wary, and small contractors already compete. Most work comes just before the monsoon. Well digging carries real accident risk, so checks for bad air inside wells, safety harnesses, training and insurance are a must.
