This is a rented grain warehouse built for safe storage, with a raised floor, damp-proofing, pest control and a weighbridge. Rice mills, farmer groups, traders and individual farmers pay rent by the bag or by floor space to hold paddy, ragi and maize for a few months.
NABARD's 2026-27 credit plan for Mysuru lists paddy, ragi, jowar and maize among the district's crops and names grain storage as a gap. It maps just ₹25.70 cr of lending for building storage, against ₹7,692.23 cr for crop loans. The plan also backs village cooperative societies (PACS) building their own godowns, so pick a crop belt they do not already cover, or rent space to them.
What it takes: land near a main road, a well-built shed, fumigation by licensed pest-control staff, insurance and careful stock records. Registering with the national warehouse regulator makes it easier for depositors to get bank loans against stored grain, which draws farmers in. The hard part is the high building cost and keeping the space full all year, since harvests are seasonal and cooperative godowns will compete for the same grain.
Buyers are farmers and farmer groups, rice mills, maize traders who supply poultry feed mills, and government buying agencies that need extra space. Meet them at local market yards and through farmer groups.
