GI Mysore silk saree house (D2C + export)

Unverified

Mysuru's GI Mysore silk is woven locally but sold largely through middlemen with thin weaver margins. A provenance-led saree house buys authentic GI silk, builds a designed SKU range, and sells D2C to metro and diaspora buyers at brand pricing.

NABARD's Potential Linked Credit Plan for Mysuru (2026-27) — the newest edition, released December 2025 — sizes the district's bankable opportunity at ₹24,256 crore, by far the largest in the corridor. Agriculture and allied activities take 56% (₹13,646 crore) and MSME 35% (₹8,390 crore). Mysuru is a heritage city and an industrial hub of nine blocks, where agriculture (paddy, ragi, sugarcane, tobacco, turmeric, ginger) sits alongside a fast-growing services economy.

For an entrepreneur, four clusters stand out. First, MSME and IT — Karnataka's 'Beyond Bengaluru' mission (KDEM) plans to seed 5,000 IT companies and start-ups in the Mysuru cluster by 2026, projected to create around 10 lakh direct and indirect jobs; MSME credit potential alone is ₹8,390 crore. Second, dairy — by far the single largest term-credit line at ₹1,187 crore, riding the district's milk-cooperative network and a planned expansion of PACS, dairy and fisheries cooperatives. Third, food and agro-processing (₹434 crore) plus FPO-led aggregation — four new FPOs at Bannikuppe, Nanjangud, Saligrama and Bettadapura already operate under the GoI 10,000-FPO scheme. Fourth, storage and cooperative infrastructure — 32 PACS have been backed for godowns and buildings, with plans for the state's largest grain-storage network.

The PLP's own complaints: industry is crowded into Mysuru and Nanjangud and needs to spread to Hunsur and Periyapatna; existing estates need better roads and drainage; and credit for education, housing, social infrastructure and renewable energy lags potential. Anyone building storage, processing or IT-enabled MSME ventures here finds the credit already sized.

What the plan promotes

  • MSME & IT (₹8,390 cr, 35% of the plan) — Karnataka's 'Beyond Bengaluru' mission (KDEM) plans to seed 5,000 IT companies and start-ups in the Mysuru cluster by 2026, projected to create around 10 lakh direct and indirect jobs; manufacturing working capital alone is ₹6,692 cr
  • Dairy development (₹1,187 cr) — by far the single largest term-credit line, riding the district's milk-cooperative network and a planned expansion of PACS/dairy/fisheries cooperatives
  • Crop & horticulture economy — paddy, ragi, jowar, maize, sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, banana, turmeric and ginger; plantation & horticulture with sericulture carries ₹386 cr, with turmeric/ginger as spice opportunities
  • FPO-led aggregation — four FPOs at Bannikuppe, Nanjangud, Saligrama and Bettadapura are operating under the GoI 10,000-FPO scheme
  • Food & agro-processing (₹434 cr) — processing of the district's crop and dairy output, supported by PMFME micro-food-processing
  • PACS-as-MSC infrastructure & grain storage — 32 PACS backed for godowns and buildings (23 complete), with plans for the state's largest grain-storage network and PACS computerization (176 identified, 139 live)

Gaps the plan names

  • Industrial-area infrastructure — road connectivity and drainage in existing industrial areas need improvement to attract Beyond-Bengaluru investment and employment
  • Industrial spread — almost all industrial areas are concentrated in Mysuru and Nanjangud blocks; new industrial areas are needed in Hunsur and Periyapatna along the Mysuru-Kodagu stretch
  • Under-served credit sectors — credit flow under Education, Housing, Social Infrastructure and Renewable Energy lags the district's potential; bankers are to be sensitised to enhance it
  • Grain storage — the PLP backs creating the state's largest grain-storage network through PACS, against only ₹25.70 cr of construction-of-storage potential mapped versus a ₹7,692 cr crop economy
  • Cooperative infrastructure — PACS computerization is incomplete (176 identified, 139 live as of September 2025); multipurpose PACS and new cooperatives are still being built out

Value-chain gaps

Money this district loses today

Raw output sold cheap, value added elsewhere — each gap below is an opening for a local business.

Mysore silk: raw yarn → woven GI sarees

Unverified
Raw 80%Processed 20%

The silk feeding Mysuru's famous looms is often sold as raw or basic yarn, and even finished sarees move wholesale to traders who capture the GI markup. Weaving, finishing and selling GI Mysore silk direct to consumers and boutiques captures far more value per saree than wholesale or yarn rates. A brand-led, provenance-told silk line multiplies weaver realisation.

Growth signal

Demand for authentic GI-tagged handloom silk is growing through premium and online retail.

Rosewood: raw timber → inlay art / branded craft furniture

Unverified
Raw 85%Processed 15%

Mysuru's rosewood is partly traded as raw or lightly worked timber, despite the district's renowned inlay-art skill base. Finished rosewood inlay panels, decor and branded craft furniture command several times the raw-timber value and reach gifting, decor and export buyers. A brand-positioned craft line keeps the artisanal margin local.
