This is a processing unit that buys fresh turmeric and ginger from farmers and farmer groups and turns them into products that store well. Turmeric is boiled, dried, polished and graded, or ground into powder. Ginger is washed, peeled, sliced and dried into dry ginger (sonth) or powder.
NABARD's 2026-27 credit plan for Mysuru lists turmeric and ginger among the district's crops and calls them spice opportunities. It also names four farmer producer organisations (FPOs, companies owned by farmers) working at Bannikuppe, Nanjangud, Saligrama and Bettadapura. Groups like these can pool steady lots from many small growers. Drying also gives ginger growers an outlet when fresh ginger prices crash.
What it takes: an FSSAI licence, a boiler, a drying yard or dryer, a polishing drum, a grinder and sieves, simple colour and moisture tests, and dry, pest-free storage. The hard part is price swings. Turmeric and ginger prices can rise and fall sharply from year to year, and you need cash to buy at harvest. Doing paid processing for farmer groups in lean years cuts that risk. Clean powder backed by lab reports wins repeat orders.
Buyers include spice and masala brands, Ayurveda product firms, hotels, wholesale markets and exporters. Reach them with sample lots and lab reports, and sell a small packed range in local stores.
