Shahdol turmeric polishing and powder unit

Unverified

A turmeric processing unit that boils, polishes, grades and powders the district's tribal-grown turmeric into branded, traceable retail spice, capturing value that today leaves Shahdol as raw fingers to outside traders.

Shahdol's 2024-25 credit plan adds up to about Rs 1,774 crore of bankable potential, 16% more than two years earlier. Farming is the heart of it at Rs 1,219 crore (about 69%), while small businesses (MSME) take Rs 425 crore (about 24%) and the rest goes to housing, education, social facilities and clean energy.

The single biggest opening is crop work at Rs 743 crore — paddy covers roughly 1.53 lakh hectares, and the plan urges the low-water SRI method to raise yields. Turmeric is the district's flagship product, and the plan asks for a drying yard plus cluster farming of medicinal and aromatic plants to pull in herbal buyers. Farm machinery (Rs 155 crore) and dairy (Rs 80 crore) are next, with calls for cattle markets in Burhar, Jaisinghnagar and Beohari and poultry-feed units in Gohparu and Sohagpur. On the business side, Mudra and Stand-Up India loans target women, tribal and minority owners.

The plan is frank about what is missing: thin farm-advice services, patchy power, almost no milk-collection routes or poultry feed, too little cold storage and warehousing, and soil-testing labs in only two places (it wants one per block). Banks lend cautiously here — the credit-to-deposit ratio is just 40% against the 60% norm — so rising bad loans and weak repayment discipline are real hurdles for anyone seeking finance.

What the plan promotes

  • Crop production is the biggest opportunity at Rs 742.82 cr; paddy is grown on about 1.53 lakh ha, and the PLP pushes the low-water System of Rice Intensification (SRI) to lift yields and cut input cost.
  • Turmeric (haldi) is Shahdol's One District One Product; the PLP wants a drying yard to improve quality and cluster cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants to attract herbal companies.
  • Farm mechanisation carries Rs 155.18 cr of potential, promoting small and bullock-drawn implements plus the Japanese paddy transplanter and reaper-cum-binder (Rs 1.5-2.0 lakh each) for small plots.
  • Dairy and livestock at Rs 79.77 cr; the plan calls for animal markets in Burhar, Jaisinghnagar and Beohari blocks and poultry-feed units in Gohparu and Sohagpur blocks.
  • MSME credit potential is Rs 425.30 cr, channelled through Mudra and Stand-Up India especially for women, minorities and SC/ST entrepreneurs in manufacturing and services.
  • NABARD supported formation of new FPOs (11 registered FPOs in the district) and SHG-bank linkage; under RIDF, 55 projects worth Rs 187.71 cr cover rural roads, bridges, health centres, drinking water and irrigation.

Gaps the plan names

  • Weak farm-extension reach and irregular, untimely power supply hold back productivity across most of the district.
  • Most of the district lacks milk routes and dairy-marketing facilities, and there is no poultry-feed supply, stalling growth in dairy and poultry.
  • Shortage of post-harvest and storage infrastructure (rural godowns, warehouses, cold storage) and of good-quality seed and breeding stock.
  • Soil testing is inadequate, with only one lab at Shahdol mandi and one at the KVK; the plan wants a soil-testing lab in every one of the 5 development blocks.
  • Rising bank NPAs and weak credit discipline (including under SHG-bank linkage) make banks reluctant to lend; CD ratio was just 40.08% against the 60% norm.

Value-chain gaps

Money this district loses today

Raw output sold cheap, value added elsewhere — each gap below is an opening for a local business.

Tribal forest produce: raw collection → graded, branded MFP

Unverified
Raw 85%Processed 15%

Shahdol's mahua, tendu, honey and other minor forest produce are sold raw by tribal collectors to middlemen at distress prices. Cleaning, grading, processing and branding these as packaged forest-honey, mahua products and graded MFP commands several times the raw-collection rate and reaches health-food and specialty retail. A local processing-and-branding unit ends the middleman discount on tribal collection.

Turmeric: raw → polished fingers / powder / curcumin extract

Unverified
Raw 85%Processed 15%

Shahdol's ODOP turmeric, grown by tribal farmers, is sold raw at mandi prices with the value addition captured elsewhere. Polished fingers, branded turmeric powder and curcumin extract command a several-times per-kg premium and ship to retail, export and nutraceutical buyers. A local boiling, polishing and grinding unit keeps the processing margin with the tribal growers who produce it.

Growth signal

The global curcumin and turmeric-nutraceutical market is growing at roughly double-digit CAGR.
